Black Voters in Lackawanna Count, Scranton’s History

As we approach Election Day, it's crucial for us at BSP to share a piece of Scranton's history that often goes untold: the story of Black voters in Lackawanna County. Did you know Black men were actively voting and engaged in politics in Scranton?

Let's honor their legacy and ensure our voices are heard

Despite challenges, Black voters held rallies, meetings, and even managed to have their voices heard in local newspapers like the Scranton Times. Imagine the difficulty of getting the "thoughts of Negro voters" into print in the 1880s, yet they persevered.

By the 1920s, alongside the women's suffrage movement, Black women joined Black men in voting, collectively making up 75% of Lackawanna County voters. Their persistence reminds us of the importance of our own vote today.
