For many, July 4th may be a day of celebration and for others a day of reflection. So, to those  of you who may be out there reminiscing on the political decisions of America, let’s look back at how #BlackScrantonians participated in politics:

In 1920, Black women of this city were actively organizing political groups to assert their participation in local, regional, and national governments.

A newspaper clipping from a Sept. 29, 1920 issue of the Scranton Republican (later known as  Scranton Times) reveals the conception of a political club for and by women of color. This announcement made the news just one month after the 19th amendment of the U.S. Constitution granted American Women the right to Vote. Black women of our city wasted no time mobilizing and organizing political leagues.

I say all that to say, I hope this inspires and motive you to be the change you want to see.
